Event Details

Manchester Girl Geeks celebrate the Code Year 2012 - with an intro to coding.
Sunday 19th February 2012, 2-4.30pm
@Madlab, Manchester
With the help of www.codecademy.com, our very own girl geek Kat (aka @binarykitten) will walk and talk you through the first steps to writing your own code (in JavaScript, to be precise). This short intro class is aimed at absolute beginners, who have little or no knowledge of programming, as well as people who would like to refresh their coding skills. Children from age 10 and older who know how to use a computer are more than welcome, too! Feel free to bring your young ones and share a laptop with them.
The class will be around 2 hours with plenty of explanations of what and why you are coding. And as always, there will breaks for tea, biscuits and chats with other girl geeks and soon-to-be geeks!
Tickets
We only have limited spaces for this event. In order to make sure that everyone who wants to come gets a ticket, we charge our usual £2 booking fee for this event. We will provide some tea & biscuits, but we would like to point out that our venue - MadLab - appreciates donations. Look out for the donation cat :)
What To Bring...
- A wi-fi ready laptop + charger (absolutely necessary, unfortunately we won't have any spare PCs)
- Your favourite mug
- Your favourite biscuits, cupcakes, tea, coffee (we’ll have the basics, but in case you fancy something slightly more interesting… :)
- Your friends, sisters, mums, cousins, daughters, colleagues… who might be interested in learning something new!
Why learn to code?
There are many reasons why having an understanding of program code is helpful. First, having even a basic understanding of code helps to, as Gina Trapani put it, demystify technology. You'll find out how everything, yes, everything, that you see on your computer started out as a few lines of text in a simple editor. Realising this takes away some of the barriers we have to cross in order to become confident and comfortable users of technology.
Second: good programmers are hard to find; the industry (and by that we mean basically every single business you could think of) is faced with a huge lack of skilled IT professionals. Ask any developer whether they know of some company looking for developers, and the response is guaranteed to be an endless list of job offers of all facets of IT work. To quote Steve Graham (@stevegraham): "on the off chance anyone is looking for dev[elopment] work, i know like a bajillion companies that are hiring."
Third: It's fun. And rewarding. Learning to create your own programs, mini-games, websites or experimental software is incredibly satisfying. Spending a few hours twisting your brains to fix a bug may seem daunting, but so is running for hours to complete a marathon: The experience and the knowledge that you have succeeded makes up for all the pain on the way.
And finally: Even if you only come along to this one session and realise it's just not for you, we're going to have a splendid afternoon with tea, biscuits, and chats. What's not to like?
